How to Care for Powder Coated Hardware?

 

Compared with paint, powder coating has extremely strong anti-rust, anti-corrosion, anti-flaking and anti-fading capabilities. However, this resilience is not suitable for chemical cleaners and solvents to clean powder coated stuff is completely safe. Acetone and other harsh cleaners and solvents can actually damage powder coatings.

 

The powder-coated finish remains cleanable. Just wipe off the dust with a soft clock. If additional cleaning is required, carefully clean with highly diluted mild soapy water and a soft washcloth or sponge. Rinse with water and pat dry with another soft towel.

 

If the Powder Coat Has Changed

 

If your powder-coated metal loses its luster, it's easy to restore its luster. After removing the grime with a mild soap, you can apply a thin coat of wax as you would wax your car. After the wax dries, wipe it all off and the powder-coated metal will return to its original luster. Note that we only recommend this for non-matte finishes. Always try on an inconspicuous place first.

 

Dont Paint!

 

If you're wondering if you can fix imperfections in a powder coat with paint, don't! Due to the polymers in the powder coating, the paint will not stick. If your powder coat is showing wear and tear, you will need a professional to repair or redo the powder coat.

 

Leave It Alone

 

It may seem counterintuitive, but both PVD coating and powder coating are corrosion-resistant, low-maintenance coatings. They will last the longest if they are cleaned infrequently, gently, and used mostly as intended.

 


How to Care for PVD Coating?

 

PVD is used for its durable, scratch-resistant finish. But even then, PVD coatings can still be damaged by severe impact or repeated friction with abrasives. For daily cleaning, wipe with a soft, clean cotton or microfiber cloth.

 

Using Cleaners

 

Never use strong alkaline or acidic cleaners such as soap flakes or vinegar. The former leaves an oily film that wears away the coating over time. The latter can damage or etch the coating. Includes steel wool and polish. Likewise, do not use highly abrasive scrubs or steel wool, they will scratch the coating and are not necessary for cleaning PVD coated products.

 

But, I had PVD and it wore off before?

 

When PVD is applied very thinly and used repeatedly (such as some watches), the PVD may peel off. Some industries refer to any matte ferrous metal as PVD. True PVD, especially the one used by well-known designers and retailers, will not wear out if cared for properly.
